Robert Trent Jones II Golf Architects to design new course in Mexico

A new 18-hole golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones II Golf Architects will form part of a luxury resort community currently under development in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Scheduled to open in 2018, Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas will be constructed on a two-mile stretch of land between the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains and the Sea of Cortez.

“Our canvas is a gently rolling expanse of sand that rises to nearly 40 metres,” said Bruce Charlton, president and chief design officer at Robert Trent Jones II. “The sand is good, so we’re digging features into the existing topography and using the sand both as a seed bed and a framing element. We’ll have formal bunkers as well as blow-out sand features. It’s a beautiful dunescape – we’re accentuating it with golf holes that will offer dramatic ocean and estuary views.”

The new design will be a core golf course, with hotel and residential buildings located around the perimeter.

“We’ll have an excellent variety of good short par fours and long strong par fives,” Charlton added. “We’re building a fun, playable course with several double-wide fairways, open-entry greens and lateral hazards.”

The new course will be a further golfing addition to the Baja California peninsula, which has seen a flurry of development since the turn of the millennium. Notable courses in the area include the first Tiger Woods Design course to open at El Cardonal, and Rees Jones’ new design at Danzante Bay.
