Tim Liddy is turning his attention to greens complexes for the 2023 phase of renovation work on the Pete Dye-designed Stadium course at the PGA West resort in La Quinta, California.

“The Stadium course will evolve into a more challenging layout post-restoration,” said Liddy, a former associate of Dye. “We will be able to place hole locations adjacent to the water’s edge. It will revitalise the essence of Pete Dye’s vision, delivering an exciting and dramatic golfing experience.”

Work will begin in May and will see greens expanded back to their original sizes, reinstating Dye’s design to greenside bunkers, regrassing putting surfaces and installing a new irrigation system around greens. Liddy was appointed by the resort in 2022 and has already overseen initial work, including landscaping and tree removal.

“For nearly four decades, the Stadium course, one of Pete Dye’s most challenging designs, has been on the ‘bucket list’ of golfers worldwide,” said PGA West executive director Ben Dobbs. “Certain elements of the course have been impacted by the forces of nature throughout the years. Our goal is to restore the course back to its prime, offering an unforgettable experience that will attract golfers from every skill level.”

Liddy, who has also led renovations of the Mountain and Dunes courses at the resort, will work alongside Michael O’Connor, who worked as a project manager for Dye, including five years at Whistling Straits. “Our personal experience standing at Mr Dye’s side for so many years will guide us on the details of this important update of the Stadium golf course,” said Liddy.

The project is expected to finish in autumn.
