British pair to build Wiltshire course
British golf architects Adrian Stiff and Ben Stephens have formed a new partnership, and, as SAS Golf Design, are embarking on their first project, in Wiltshire in England’s south-west.
Westbury Golf Club, located near the famous White Horse cut into the chalk downs, was founded in 1973. Currently nine holes, the club has acquired more land, bringing the total size of the property to 100 acres, and the SAS team now plan to expand the course to eighteen holes.
Inert landfill will be used to fund the project and also to provide material to build the holes – Stiff has extensive experience building courses using landfill, most recently the new Stranahan course at the Players Club near Bristol.
The expanded course will be built in two phases, enabling the club to keep nine holes in play at all times. Phase one will involve the construction of nine holes on the recently acquired land, while phase two will see nine entirely new holes built on the site of the existing course. The completed course will stretch to 6,500 yards, playing to a par of 70. SAS say that the design will be influenced by old-style courses, with a number of grassy hollows, only a small number of sand bunkers and a large water feature which comes into play on two holes. The course is expected to be completed by 2015.
