East Lake appoints Andrew Green to develop renovation plan

East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, has appointed Andrew Green to develop a renovation master plan for the golf course and practice facilities.

Work is set to begin after the 2023 Tour Championship, which East Lake has hosted since 2004 and is now the finale of the PGA Tour Playoffs and FedEx Cup.

In a post on Twitter Green said: “What an honour! Lots of history to protect and enhance. I am thrilled to be part of the team!” He added: “I’m just getting started. The big thing is to understand how the course has evolved, what was the original intent and what the future goal is. Blending all of that tends to pave the way.”

Green told GCA: “I am poring through historic images and writing to help us establish the best vision of the course that Bobby Jones and Alexa Stirling learned the game on. Interestingly, the course had summer and winter greens at that time. We are trying to understand how that design feature can be translated to the modern game. I’m not sure yet if it can, but other classic elements of the Donald Ross vision will most certainly be intertwined into the future of the course.”

East Lake was originally designed by Tom Bendelow in 1908, with Donald Ross redesigning the course and creating two loops of nine in 1913. George Cobb made minor alterations in 1959 ahead of the 1963 Ryder Cup and Rees Jones completed a renovation project in 1995 and additional work since.
