Frank Pont to oversee restoration of Camberley Heath Golf Club course

Camberley Heath Golf Club is undertaking an multi-year restoration of its course, to be overseen by architect Frank Pont of Infinite Variety Golf Design.

The project will have a major focus on restoring the bunkering across the course, and some work may be done on individual tees, fairways and greens.

“Camberley is a great design by Harry Colt set in the beautifully undulating heathland landscape of Surrey,” said Frank Pont, Infinite Variety Golf Design. “The routing is enormously varied, the par three’s are superb and despite the moderate size of the site the course feels rather spacious. However, over the last 30 years the course has undergone various changes, a number of which unfortunately have not improved the golf course.

Pont will advise and assist the club with both the preparation of a detailed plan for the course and the carrying out of the proposed restorations and alterations.

“Our particular focus at this stage will lie in restoring the bunker style back to the heather style that Colt used so successfully at neighbouring courses such as Swinley Forest and Sunningdale Old and New,” added Pont. “In my view there is no reason given the quality of the underlying design why Camberley Heath won’t be held in the same high regard as these famous Colt courses in Surrey after we are done with this restoration project.”

The Camberley Heath Golf Club course was designed by Harry Colt and was established in 1913.

“In announcing our forthcoming bunker and course regeneration project we at Camberley Heath Golf Club are very pleased to confirm the appointment of Frank Pont of Infinite Variety Golf Design to assist us in our vision of returning our course to its original Harry Colt design,” said Richard Broderick, head of the committee managing the restoration. “We are very much looking forward to working with Frank on this very exciting project.”
