Tripp Davis completes masterplan for Rumson Country Club course restoration

Tripp Davis and Associates Golf course architecture firm has completed a masterplan for the restoration of the course at Rumson Country Club in New Jersey.

The club suffered severe damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012, with several holes damaged significantly by flooding and 150 trees were brought down across the course.

Davis is noted for the strong emphasis placed on the heritage and history of the courses on which his firm works, and Rumson Country Club is no exception.

Originally designed by Herbert H. Barker, the course is famed for its unusually shaped fairway bunkers and bunkers placed in front of greens, as well as numerous challenging water hazards.

“Rumson is a great club with a lot of history and I have really enjoyed uncovering the architectural lineage of the golf course, dating back to the original design by Herbert Barker that opened in 1910,” said Tripp Davis. “Barker also was very involved with helping Walter Travis do the redesign of Garden City Golf Club in preparation for the 1908 U.S. Amateur. The two courses have a lot of similarities and Garden City will certainly be a source of inspiration as we move forward.”

Davis has worked on numerous historic courses across the US and his firm is currently implementing a master plan for the restoration of the George Thomas designed Spring Lake Golf, which was also worked on by A. W. Tillinghast.
