Stonycroft Hills to begin renovation work following approval of Wilczynski masterplan
Stonycroft Hills Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, has approved renovation plans drawn up by golf course architect Chris Wilczynski. King Village Golf & Landscape has been appointed for construction work, which will begin in August 2025 and is expected to be completed by the end of October.
The club can trace its roots back to 1928, when local advertising executive Theodore McManus built the golf course on his 72-acre farm. By 1960, members purchased and formally founded the now-private club. Wilczynski will oversee a full-scale revitalisation aimed at modernising the course while honouring its classic roots. His plan aims to enhance playability and aesthetics for members and guests of all skill levels.
The renovation will include some tree removal to improve sightlines and open playing corridors, along with the introduction of new specimen trees to strengthen landscape character and long-term course sustainability.
Tees will be renovated, including new and expanded tees, with a particular focus on middle and forward tees. Greens will be expanded to provide more play options, and short grass fairway connections will be introduced between greens and tees. A new putting green will be introduced and the ninth hole green complex will be completely renovated. New and renovated bunkers will be lined with the Better Billy Bunker system. Fairways will also be realigned.
“This project represents a significant step forward for Stonycroft Hills,” said Wilczynski. “Our goal is to elevate the golf experience while preserving the charm and integrity that have always defined this club. The improvements will enhance strategy, improve course conditions, and provide a more enjoyable round for all.”
Stonycroft Hills general manager Taras Strychar said: “The approved plan reflects a shared vision to enhance our course’s beauty, challenge and member enjoyment – ensuring that Stonycroft Hills remains one of the premier private clubs in Southeast Michigan.”
