RICHARD HUMPHREYS The surge in golf course projects that we referenced in the introduction to last year’s edition of GCA Green Pages is now clearly visible on the ground. A host of new projects have been completed, from long-awaited repair and replacement work to comprehensive renovations and entirely new courses. Over the following pages we have included a series of articles that highlight some of those projects that were completed during 2023 – including Druids Glen in Ireland, The Wisley and Ingestre Park in the UK, SouthShore in USA and Point Hardy in Saint Lucia. The experiences of these past few years have emphasised to golf clubs and developers the importance of planning. Often a major hurdle is identifying the businesses – architects, contractors, irrigation firms, bunker specialists and other suppliers – who can best support a specific project, and engaging with them sufficiently in advance to secure their availability when work gets the green light. The Supplier Directory section of GCA Green Pages – available here in print and online at www.golfcoursearchitecture.net/greenpages – is designed to help you in that crucial aspect of planning. There is a list of suppliers organised by type of service on page 19, following by company descriptions and contact details beginning on page 23. I hope you find this guide an informative and valuable resource, and wish you all the best for your golf projects in 2024 and beyond. Planning for success WELCOME 1

Photos: Kevin Markham RAIN BIRD Druids Glen Hotel & Golf Resort is located 20 miles south of Dublin, Ireland, nestled between the Irish Sea and the Wicklow Mountains. The club’s championship course was designed by Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock, and it opened in 1995. Since then, it has hosted both the Irish Open and the Seve Trophy and is a previous winner of the European Golf Course of the Year award. To maintain the status of the course, resort owners Neville Hotels made a multi-million-euro investment into a renovation project that concluded in June 2023. The project was led by architects Jeff Lynch of re(GOLF) and Peter McEvoy. The project team also consisted of John Clarkin of Turfgrass, Giles Wardle of Irriplan, DAR Golf Construction, Aquaturf Solutions, Irish TurfCare and Rain Bird. “Tackling and ripping up what the Irish consider a gem of a course, and one they have a romantic attachment to, certainly creates a certain amount of pressure,” said Lynch. “The course was overdue a makeover to bring it up to modern tournament standards for the elite golfer, potentially for the Open in the future, and yet still needed be an enjoyable golfing experience for everyday golfers. “With all our experience in course design and construction, Peter and I had a good idea about what would be needed to be done to enhance the existing canvas. Of course, you can design an engaging course on paper but everything we designed on plan was actually Maintaining an Irish gem Druids Glen has installed the Rain Bird IC System to have greater control of water on the course. 8

achieved. The architectural design must, importantly, stack up as a great course to play and so far, feedback has been very good.” The irrigation system at Druids Glen hadn’t been updated since the course was opened nearly 30 years ago and didn’t meet modern standards. For its replacement, course manager Jonathan Bradshaw and owners Neville Hotels selected the Rain Bird IC System with CirrusPRO Central Control software. Wardle designed an irrigation system with double and triple row coverage on fairways at specific holes. Over 1,000 Rain Bird 752 and 900/950 Series rotors were installed across the course with isolation valves that allow irrigation to a specific green or fairway to be shut off when needed. “We’re irrigating a much greater area of maintained turf and while we don’t pay for water extraction, using less water overall means using less power which saves money,” said Bradshaw. “CirrusPRO is very easy to use, and its real-time interface alerts us immediately if anything isn’t working properly. Whether I’m on my phone, tablet or the PC, there is access to the full central control software giving instant control and reliability. The new system is dependable, giving us everything Rain Bird promised it could. Financially, the long-term benefit is in time saved.” In addition to the new irrigation system, the renovation project also saw 20 greens reshaped, tiered and extended, new tee boxes and bunkers renovated and repositioned. Upgrades were also made to drainage and pathways. “Our approach as designers was re-imagining the course, taking a completely fresh look, working with what was already arresting topography to create a more interesting and dramatic blend of features,” said Lynch. “The course was aesthetically reshaped to be more visually attractive, open and appealing, using the angles of the sun, the light and shadows, as a landscape painter might do.” Bradshaw adds: “It’s a privilege to work at one of Ireland’s top courses. As it’s a family business with buy-in from the top down, we all share the same ethos.” For more on Rain Bird, turn to page 51, or visit www.rainbird.com/golf The new Rain Bird irrigation system at Druids Glen allows a greater level of control and reliability 9

Photo: MJ Abbott MJ ABBOTT From the outset of 2023, UK construction firm MJ Abbott has found little time to pause, with the widely reported boom in golf translating to the ground. The early part of the year saw the completion of several small and mid-size projects: a short-game practice green, six-hole academy and putting green at Goodwood Estate in Sussex; a return to the West course at Wentworth, Surrey, to improve tournament infrastructure with two large compound areas for television and hospitality; the third phase of bunker work at Burnham Beeches in Buckinghamshire; and a return to Surrey for a new parthree sixteenth at Foxhills Club & Resort and three new tees on the Old course at Sunningdale. Two large projects were completed in spring and summer: the reconstruction of the Garden nine at The Wisley in Woking and the redesign of La Grande Mare, by European Golf Design, on the island of Guernsey. England experienced one of its wettest summers on record, creating ground issues and making it challenging to meet summer and autumn seeding schedules. Building the boom MJ Abbott has completed a host of construction projects across the UK in 2023. 10 MJ Abbott rebuilt the Garden nine at The Wisley

11 The Garden at The Wisley was designed to connect to the club’s original, 30-year-old drainage infrastructure. However, raised river discharge levels, silt and tree root ingress meant that a lot of the system had to be replaced in advance of MJ Abbott starting work. Meanwhile, the site at La Grande Mare, which was extended onto adjoining land, had to be cleared. Again, silt and old buried structures presented some challenges and had to be removed prior to golf course construction starting. Both courses received new fairway drainage systems with The Wisley also benefiting from sand slitting and sand dressing while La Grande Mare now has sandcapped approaches and runoff areas. Automatic irrigation systems at both sites were also installed, providing fairways, surrounds and greens with full coverage. Rain Bird was selected for The Wisley, and Toro for La Grande Mare. In late summer and autumn, MJ Abbott rebuilt the second green complex at Rowlands Castle in Hampshire and returned to Royal Wimbledon in London to complete the final phase of the six-year redevelopment project. This included the reconstruction of the last six holes as well as installing primary drainage on four holes, secondary drainage on six holes and irrigation on 12 holes. There was no let-up in work as the end of the year approached. The third phase of bunker work at Hankley Common in Surrey started in November, and final touches were completed at Ingestre Park in Staffordshire, where the course has been reconfigured – and 12 new holes built – as a result of plans for the HS2 high-speed railway line. ZLINE BUNKER SYSTEMS Nestled on the shore of Lake Las Vegas, in Nevada, the golf course at SouthShore Country Club was laid out by Nicklaus Design in 1996. It rises from the lake edge up to the ridges of rugged canyons, and is characterised by its strategic bunkering. Over time however, those bunkers began to show signs of wear and tear, prompting the club to embark upon a renovation. Construction management firm Fusion Golf collaborated with ZLine Bunker Systems with a goal to improve the appearance of the bunkers while also prioritising functionality and sustainability. The firms worked together to analyse the existing conditions and create a masterplan for the renovation. The ZLine liner system was chosen to enhance playability and drainage, and minimise disruption to play Leaving nothing to chance in Vegas SouthShore Country Club has chosen bunker lining from ZLine Bunker Systems to enhance their appearance, functionality and sustainability. SouthShore Country Club has renovated its bunkers using lining from ZLine Bunker Systems 12

13 from inclement weather. The liners are also designed to hold sand in place – even on steep slopes – and thereby reducing maintenance requirements. “The renovation was a labour of love and precision,” said Casey Jones, national sales and product manager at ZLine Bunker Systems. “It wasn’t just about upgrading the bunkers; it was about preserving the essence of Nicklaus’s design while enhancing playability for golfers of all skill levels. Fusion Golf’s team of experienced golf construction personnel came in and, with minimal disturbance to golf play, began an extensive renovation of the desert landscape. The team carefully reshaped and crafted each bunker to reflect the natural contours of the original design and landscape, seamlessly blending aesthetics with functionality. “Once shaping and finish work were completed, ZLine’s Installation team came in and performed the liner installation and bonding, a process that utilises specialised hot-melt technology to create a seamless one-piece liner with incredible strength that outperforms traditional adhesives.” Fusion Golf and ZLine Bunker Systems then briefed the club’s maintenance staff to ensure the longevity and performance of the new bunker liners. The bunker renovations have delivered several key benefits for the club, including improved playability. The newly renovated bunkers have transformed what were previously viewed as hazards into strategic elements that add to the challenge and allure of the course. “As SouthShore continues to evolve, this renovation demonstrates its commitment to providing world-class amenities and experiences to its members and guests,” said Jones. “It’s not just a renovation; it’s an enduring testament to the legacy of golf and the marriage of tradition and innovation.” For more on ZLine Bunker Systems, turn to page 60, or visit www.zlineproducts.com

15 ATLAS TURF INTERNATIONAL/PURE SEED Photo: Michael Marcellin Cabot Saint Lucia has opened a new Coore & Crenshaw design, at Point Hardy Golf Club on the northern tip of the Caribbean island. The course is built along one-and-a-half miles of coastline, featuring a sequence of clifftop oceanside holes. The rocky nature of the site necessitated sandcapping, but shipping sand to the island would have been too expensive, so the playing surfaces were formed from a volcanic pumice sand sourced from the island. Unfortunately, this sand has poor drainage characteristics, so it was essential to carefully plan surface drainage and use the right grass. Coore and Crenshaw worked with Damon Di Giorgio, director of agronomy at Cabot Saint Lucia, and selected Pure Dynasty seeded seashore paspalum, which was developed by Pure-Seed Testing and supplied by Atlas Turf and Pure Seed. “Paspalum was a natural choice because of the course’s proximity to the sea, the salt spray and the natural build-up of salts in the soil,” said Coore. Pure Dynasty is available as a seeded product, which is also a crucial factor as Saint Lucia prohibits the importation of vegetative material, making sprigging or sodding impossible. “Atlas Turf and Pure Seed are proud to have Pure Dynasty featured on this phenomenal golf course,” said John Holmes, president of Atlas Turf International. “Where else could the extreme salt tolerance, versatile playability and resistance to heat and disease of one turfgrass be challenged so magnificently?” The grass is used over the entire course, including the greens, a decision which Di Giorgio says is working out well. “Ben Crenshaw, one of the greatest putters ever to play, told me the greens were rolling well, which was a nice compliment,” he said.
